This is our third Fall season here in the Shenandoah Valley. The first two were drier than normal, which made for less than spectacular foliage. This year was the opposite, setting rainfall records from late spring through the summer. And the colors were fantastic. Leaf peepers (the folks who come to see the foliage) were out in force the past few weekends.
River Dell is located on the west bank of the south fork of the Shenandoah River, at the foot of the Massanutten Mountain range, which itself sits in the middle of the Shenandoah Valley. And in the middle is Fort Valley, the “valley within the valley” between the two Massanutten ridges. We drove and hiked through it a bit last Saturday, where we encountered fewer people. These photos show some of the foliage along Passage Creek, which runs through the valley.
River Dell is a great place to get away any time of year. Much of the natural beauty is accessible even in the winter. Come visit!
